Johnson Bible College

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johnson Bible College is a private Bible college located six miles southeast of Knoxville, Tennessee. It was founded in 1893 by Ashley S. Johnson as The School of the Evangelists. It is the second oldest continuing Bible College in the United States, and is the oldest Bible College affiliated with the Independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ. There are about 25 full time faculty members, and approximately 1,000 students, enrollment having nearly doubled in the last decade.

Johnson Bible College first received regional accreditation in 1979 from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools It is also accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education.

To accompany the growth, there is an increasing number of majors offered. Since JBC is a Bible college, each student majors in Bible, and may choose a second major (Elementary Education, Preaching) or specialty (Youth Ministry, Children's Ministry) in addition. The preaching program, the college's first and initially only offering, remains the most popular. Youth ministry, counseling, music, media, elementary education, middle school education, ESL (English as a Second Language) Education, TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), missions, radio & television production, and graduate programs in marriage and family counseling, holistic education, educational technology, and New Testament round out the offerings. There is also an honors program which offers majors in history, English, and apologetics.

Graduates from Johnson Bible College go on to do a wide variety of service in the name of Christ. Many preach, teach, or otherwise serve the local church; others teach in the school systems, establish counseling practices, or serve on the mission field; still others continue their education at the graduate level in seminaries or secular schools.

Full time students attend chapel three times a week - with one being a small group study of their selection. Students also participate in extra curricular activities on campus (such as the work study programs, intravarsity athletics, and use of the student activity center), as well as off campus, including area attractions in Knoxville or Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Significant student life development comes from the Student Ministry program, which matches the College's effort to develop students both academically and spiritually.
