Jones is a common family name that comes from the term 'Son of John' but can also be attributed to the name 'Jonah. It has further been suggested it derives from Germanic settlers in the United Kingdom with the name Johannes. It is also a common last name of people with Scandinavian heritage since common Scandinavian names such as Johansson and Jonsson were changed to Jones when settlers came to America. Jones is the most common surname in Wales because of the anglicisation of patronymic surnames e.g. Gwilym ap John to Gwilym Jones.

Jones may refer to:

  • Mike Jones (wrestler), professional wrestler better known as Virgil in the World Wrestling Federation
  • Thomas Jones, British professional wrestler
  • Allen Jones, professional wrestler better known as AJ Styles in Total Non-stop Action

On 3rd November 2006 an attempt to break the world record for the largest gathering of people with the same surname took place at Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. The Jones Jones Jones event was attended by rock singer and ex-Bond girl Grace Jones, opera singers Dame Gwyneth Jones and Gwyn Hughes Jones and was presented by Blue Peter presenter Gethin Jones and former S4C presenter Gwenllian Jones, the latter having travelled especially from Sydney, Australia.

The event was officiated by Guinness World Records and officially had 1,224 people with the surname Jones, all of whom had to show identification at the door in order to gain entry. This surpassed the previous same-surname world record set in Sweden in 2004 with 583 people with the surname Norberg.
