Jonathan "Jonny" Evans (born 3 January 1988, Belfast, Northern Ireland) is a football central defender who currently plays for Championship club Sunderland on-loan from Manchester United.

He has been at Manchester United's football Academy for 3 years but he is yet to make his professional debut for the club, but after a strong season for the reserve team in 2005-2006, he was given a chance in the first team during the 2006 pre-season programme as United looked to youth in the absence of several players still recovering from their exertions in that summer's World Cup.

Evans featured in 2 of the 3 games on the club's tour of South Africa and then started in domestic friendlies against Celtic and Preston North End, scoring a fine volley in the 8th minute of the former. When injuries crippled a stronger United squad out in the Netherlands for the Amsterdam Tournament, Evans was flown out to bolster the defensive ranks and started the second game against Ajax, putting in a fine performance against quality opposition. He is considered by many (not least Sir Alex Ferguson) to be a real prospect for the future. He spent some of the 2006-2007 season on loan at Manchester United's Belgian feeder club Royal Antwerp F.C., with fellow youngsters Darron Gibson, Danny Simpson and Fraizer Campbell.

In September 2006 Evans made his full Northern Ireland debut at left back, an unfavoured position. He helped his side to a famous 3-2 victory against Spain[1] and was one of the stars of the performance. He described the match as "the best night of my life".[citation needed]

In December 2006 he agreed a loan deal with Sunderland[2]

Jonny attended Belfast High School in Newtonabbey, Northern Ireland. He got 9 GCSE's, all of which were A* or A grades.
