KKRZ began its legacy as a Top 40 in 1984 with a direction patterned after sister station WHTZ/New York City (down to the name "Z100") but would adopt a rhythmic-leaning format by 1986 due to Portland not having a Urban Contemporary FM. That move would pay off and make KKRZ a dominant success in the ratings in its first 15 years. That was until 1999, when it picked up competition from Rhythmic Top 40 rival KXJM who took advantage of the market's rhythmic void and filled it. With the Arrival of The Buck Head Show in 2004 KKRZ has once again taking over Portland ratings[citation needed].

The most popular show on Z-100, The Buckhead Show airs during a four hour block every weekday morning. The talk show features hosts Buckhead and Brooke Fox, with Dante, Dover, and Fanch in the background. Common segments include "Mang on The Street" and "Bucked Up" prank phone calls to local Portland businesses. The Bucked Up Calls feature Buckhead improvising voices of the Cooter family, including Mildred, a very elderly but very horny woman; Tyrel, an urban and outspoken hipster; Victor, a flaming homosexual; and Stewie, an annoying, obsessive geek. Bucked Up Calls usually air in and around 7:30am weekday mornings.
In early 2006 KKRZ launched an HD Radio service including a HD2 channel carrying an Indie Rock format.
