KOOP 91.7 FM (pronounced 'co-op') is a noncommercial community radio station owned and operated by its members. The station broadcasts in Austin, Texas, on 91.7 MHz with a power of 3000 watts.
The 91.7 frequency is shared with KVRX, the student radio station for The University of Texas at Austin. KOOP, licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to the Board of Directors of the Texas Educational Community Broadcasting (d.b.a. Austin Co-op Radio), broadcasts on 91.7 FM from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. KVRX, licensed to The University of Texas, broadcasts during the remaining hours. KOOP streams online during broadcast hours.
KOOP's building suffered two fires in early 2006. The first, on January 6, 2006, forced the radio station to begin searching for a new home. Before that search was complete, a second fire, on February 4, 2006, damaged all remaining studio equipment. KVRX broadcast during KOOP's broadcast hours for two and a half weeks, until KOOP's return to the airwaves on February 22, 2006. KOOP is broadcasting from a temporary facility while it searches for a new permanent home.
