Kakashi Hatake (はたけカカシ Hatake Kakashi?) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Naruto.
Though his name is written in the manga using kana, Japanese syllabic scripts that carry no particular meaning, the family name "Hatake" can be written in kanji (Chinese characters) as 畑 (はたけ, hatake), which means "field" or "farmland". The name "Kakashi" can be written in kanji as 案山子 (かかし, kakashi), which means "scarecrow". Understandably, Naruto uses a scarecrow look-alike of Kakashi to practice on the day before Team 7's first test, since he then considered Kakashi as the main one to defeat. Also, when Sakura spies on Kakashi so he would take off his mask, he replaces himself with a scarecrow to get rid of her.
Kakashi is a popular character, consistently ranking in the Top 5 in Shonen Jump magazine's official polls. He has taken 1st place in these polls twice.

Kakashi Hatake is the ninjutsu-specializing leader of Team 7, originally consisting of Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno. Because of the Sharingan in his left eye, given to him when he was young, Kakashi is known as "Copy Ninja Kakashi" (コピー忍者のカカシ Kopī Ninja no Kakashi?) or "Sharingan Kakashi" (写輪眼のカカシ Sharingan no Kakashi?), and with it he has been able to copy more than one thousand jutsu. Kakashi's favorite foods are broiled saury with salt and miso soup with eggplant, with his least favorite being tempura.
Kakashi's personal life appears to be as much of a mystery as the face behind the mask he has worn for most of his ninja career. He has no living family, or at least none he cares to acknowledge, and he's confirmed that everyone he loves is already dead. He is immediately recognizable as the son of (or mistaken for) the "White Fang of Konoha" (木ノ葉の白い牙 Konoha no Shiroi Kiba?), Sakumo Hatake. Though his face has never been seen, episode 101, which is devoted to Team 7 trying to remove their sensei's mask, implies that he is in fact quite handsome.
Kakashi has an ongoing, albeit slightly one-sided, rivalry with Might Guy, with Guy constantly proclaiming that Kakashi is his rival. Kakashi, however, is indifferent to their rivalry, which annoys Guy to no end. Guy randomly challenges Kakashi to contests of skill, and has acquired a record of 50 wins and 49 losses in doing so. Given that the contests that make up this figure are so varied (ranging from Rock, Paper, Scissors to sumo-wrestling), this it is not much of an achievement on Guy's part. Nevertheless, Guy is proud of his record. Guy also serves as a perfect antithesis for Kakashi, with Guy specializing in taijutsu after years of hard work, while Kakashi specializes in ninjutsu by simply copying the techniques of others.
Though he reportedly has many hobbies, the one pastime seen most in the series is his reading of "Icha Icha Paradise" (イチャイチャパラダイス Icha Icha Paradaisu?, literally "Make Out Paradise"), an adult and probably pornographic novel authored by Jiraiya that is a runaway bestseller in the Naruto world. Kakashi most prominently reads it while training and speaking with his team, and is later seen reading the second volume in the series, "Icha Icha Violence" (イチャイチャバイオレンス Icha Icha Baiorensu?, literally "Make Out Violence").
Kakashi's Sharingan eye gives him a significant advantage in battle, as he can copy enemy techniques and use them as his own, as well as track and predict his opponent's movements almost flawlessly. In addition, he can even copy a jutsu that an opponent hasn't used through the Sharingan's hypnotic and suggestive abilities. However, because it is a transplanted eye, his Sharingan eye is always active. While this would not be a problem for an Uchiha, his non-Uchiha blood causes it to use much more chakra than it should. Because of this, he covers it with his headband and only utilizes it in the most dangerous battles. Kakashi's use of the Sharingan is almost as good as that of Itachi Uchiha, though the aforementioned handicaps brought about by the nature of his eye make him weaker in comparison.
Although Kakashi specializes in the use of ninjutsu due to his Sharingan, he is also fairly adept at using both taijutsu and genjutsu, though his use of these two jutsu-types is rarely seen. Because of this well-rounded prowess in jutsu, Kakashi is one of highest-ranking ninja in Konoha, as indicated by both Sakura and the databooks. Although almost all of the jutsu he uses have been copied from others through his Sharingan, Kakashi's One Thousand Birds is his own creation. After the jutsu's initial creation, Kakashi was unable to use the One Thousand Birds to its full potential as the sheer speed of the attack left his normal eyes unable to see any form of an enemy counterattack. Once acquiring the Sharingan, however, Kakashi was able to overcome this shortcoming, and through repeated use and increased proficiency with it, Kakashi's One Thousand Birds has been renamed the Lightning Blade due to his having cut through a bolt of lightning with it.
Kakashi has his own personal pack of Ninken, which he calls into battle with the Summoning Technique. The dogs were apparently trained by Kakashi, and the smallest one, Pakkun, can even speak. Kakashi typically uses the dogs for tracking purposes, and summons them whenever he is in need of finding someone. The dogs' tracking abilities can also be used as a variant of attack, and with the Tracking Fang Technique Kakashi can find an enemy and have the dogs restrain them while he prepares a finishing blow at his leisure.

Like his father, whose skills have been compared to that of the Legendary Sannin, Kakashi is considered a genius shinobi, graduating from the Ninja Academy at age 5 and achieving the rank of Chunin at 6. A few years after these accomplishments, Kakashi's father was disgraced by the village for abandoning a mission in favor of saving his comrades, which cost the Land of Fire dearly. Because of the shame he felt, Sakumo committed seppuku, leaving Kakashi to bear witness to the event. After his father's suicide, Kakashi began to adhere strictly to the rules of the shinobi – in particular the rule dictating that the success of the mission must come before the well being of one's teammates, causing him to become arrogant, humorless, and by-the-book.
At the age of 13, Kakashi achieved Jonin status. As a reward for his accomplishment, he was assigned to lead his team on a sabotage mission to blow up a bridge in order to prevent enemy forces from attacking Konoha. Shortly after the mission started, Kakashi's teammate, Rin was captured by enemy shinobi. Kakashi's other teammate, Obito Uchiha immediately stated his intention to save her, but Kakashi said they had to focus on completing the mission, opting not to make the same mistake his father had. Though Kakashi believed that they had to complete their objective, Obito eventually convinced him that his father had done the right thing in saving his teammates, causing Kakashi to join in on the rescue effort.
During their attempt to save Rin, Kakashi lost his left eye as a result of an enemy ninja's attack. To protect Kakashi, Obito managed to awaken his Sharingan, and killed Kakashi's assailant. Soon after saving Rin, Obito again saved Kakashi, pushing him out of the way of another enemy's rock-dislodging attack but becoming crushed in the process. Shortly before he died, Obito had Rin (a medical ninja) implant his Sharingan eye in Kakashi's damaged eye socket as a gift. As his first act with his new eye, Kakashi avenged Obito by killing the enemy ninja with his now-perfected One Thousand Birds technique, bringing Copy Ninja Kakashi into being.
Obito's death profoundly changed Kakashi, and Kakashi adopted many of Obito's traits. One such trait was Obito's concept of teamwork, which is most clearly seen in the way Kakashi tests newly-graduated students hoping to become a squad under him. He uses the bell test to test his students, which requires the three students to get the two bells he keeps on his person. Only those who get a bell get to pass, which would be difficult even with teamwork, as at least one ninja would fail regardless. However, the rule is only a ruse; the point of the test is to foster teamwork and to teach the students that teamwork is more important than the rules. Kakashi also inherits Obito's chronic tardiness, due primarily to losing track of time during his frequent visits to Konoha's memorial site, where Obito's name is engraved.
After volunteering to become a squad leader for a group of graduating Academy students, Kakashi went through many potential groups of Genin, each one failing to realize the true meaning of his bell test. Upon administering the bell test on Team 7, failure seems to be imminent for them as well, as Sasuke has no interest in working with Naruto or Sakura, Sakura is only interested in helping Sasuke, and Naruto is incapable of seeing through the most obvious of traps. After lecturing the three for these faults and allowing them to have lunch, adding the stipulation that Naruto is not allowed to eat anything, Kakashi watches Team 7 in secret. As he does so, he finds Sakura and Sasuke offering food to Naruto despite his telling them not to, their reasoning being that they can't pass the test if Naruto isn't fed. Having finally encountered a team that values teamwork more than rules, Kakashi passes Team 7.
Team 7's first mission is to escort Tazuna to the Land of Waves, and upon arriving there to protect him until he completes the bridge he is building. Soon after setting out on the mission, Zabuza Momochi, hired to kill Tazuna, attacks the group, and Kakashi is forced to do battle with him while Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura protect Tazuna. Using his Sharingan to copy Zabuza's Water Clone Technique, Kakashi is able to have a few rounds of water clone encounters with Zabuza, though Zabuza eventually outmatches him at his and captures him in a prison of water. Through the combined efforts of Sasuke and Naruto, Kakashi is freed, and after using his Sharingan to copy Zabuza's techniques before he can use them, gains the upperhand on Zabuza.
Ultimately, Zabuza is able to escape and Kakashi is left bedridden due to the use of his Sharingan. As he recuperates, he trains Team 7 in the control of their chakra, and upon getting better joins his team in protecting Tazuna. In doing so, Zabuza again attacks the group, and Kakashi again does battle with him while Naruto and Sasuke deal with Haku, Zabuza's student. After toying with Zabuza for a while, Kakashi manages to restrain Zabuza by summoning his Ninken, and prepares his Lightning Blade with which to kill Zabuza. As he is about to land the finishing blow, however, Haku intervenes and takes the full force of Kakashi's attack as a human shield. Although Zabuza attempts to use Haku's sacrifice to his advantage and kill Kakashi, Kakashi is able to evade the attack and injure Zabuza's arms beyond use. With Zabuza no longer a threat, his employer revokes their contract, and Kakashi no longer has a need to fight Zabuza. After Zabuza dies at the hands of his employer's henchmen, Kakashi buries Zabuza and Haku alongside each other. Once Tazuna's bridge is completed, Team 7 returns to Konoha.
After Team 7's encounter with Orochimaru during the Chunin Exams and Sasuke's subsequent receiving of a cursed seal, Kakashi seals Sasuke's cursed seal to prevent its use. Because the seal is dependent on Sasuke's willingness to not use the cursed seal, and because the cursed seal's appeal as a source of power may be too tempting for Sasuke, Kakashi teaches Sasuke how to use the One Thousand Birds, his own Sharingan making it the perfect technique for him. Despite this, after the invasion of Konoha begins and Sasuke goes after Gaara, Kakashi worries that Sasuke may still find use in the cursed seal. Being preoccupied with protecting the village and its inhabitants, Kakashi sends Sakura and Naruto to follow and stop Sasuke. They succeed in doing so, and Konoha's invaders are effectively repelled.
When Akatsuki members Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki arrive in Konoha in search of Naruto, Kakashi joins the effort in fighting the two. Although he is able to keep up with Itachi and avoid the worst of his attacks, Kakashi falls prey to Itachi's Tsukuyomi, leaving his mind heavily damaged. After the Akatsuki members leave, the medics of Konoha are unable to heal Kakashi, and he is left in bed unable to awaken.
Once Tsunade returns to Konoha and heals Kakashi, Kakashi finds Sasuke's lust for power to have grown in his absence. Although he does what he can to steer Sasuke away from considering Orochimaru as a source of strength, he is called away on a mission before he can properly get through to Sasuke. Upon returning from his mission, Kakashi learns about Sasuke's defection and the team that was sent after him. Ignoring the new mission he has been assigned, Kakashi rushes out to find Sasuke and Naruto, determined to find them both before they can kill each other. He arrives too late, and finds Naruto near death, Sasuke having managed to escape. Once Naruto recovers, he and Sakura part ways so that they can each train to become stronger. With his students having gone on to pursue separate goals, Kakashi returns to carrying out missions for the village, Team 7 being defunct until his students' return.
Because he is preoccupied with higher-ranked missions, Kakashi is seen very little during the filler arcs, only occasionally appearing to lend assistance to the Konoha Genin. During one of his appearances, however, Kakashi is shown to be able to perform hand seals at an elevated level, being so fast that neither Naruto nor Sakura can follow his movements.
Kakashi frees Princess Fuun movie's staff from being tied up, Sasuke and Sakura having believed that the staff was responsible for hunting Fuun. The Yukigakure ninja seen throughout the movie appear to know Kakashi from a time before the movie takes place, though this is never elaborated upon. Towards the movie's end, Kakashi encounters Nadare Roga and defeats him using a variant of the Front Lotus. It is also stated that it was Kakashi who saved Fuun when she was a child during his time as an ANBU member.
Over the timeskip, Kakashi has changed very little, still looking exactly the same and still having a fondness for the "Icha Icha" series, as seen when Naruto gives him the new "Icha Icha Tactics" (イチャイチャタクティクス Icha Icha Takutikusu?, literally "Make Out Tactics"). Although Naruto and Sakura are once again teamed with him, Kakashi now treats them as equals rather than students, as both were able to outsmart him during the second bell test after their return.
Like Naruto and Sakura, Kakashi has also been training himself over the timeskip, as demonstrated by the development of his own Mangekyo Sharingan. With his variant, Kakashi is able to manipulate space-time and utilize it to conduct long range attacks, and in it two uses has been capable of severing another's arms and otherwise sending things to different dimensions. Much like the standard Sharingan, the Mangekyo Sharingan tires Kakashi considerably, and after using it only three times he was hospitalized for weeks due to its chakra usage.
When Gaara is kidnapped by Akatsuki, Team 7 is sent to help in rescuing him. After making a pit stop in Sunagakure where they are joined by Chiyo, the team proceeds to the Akatsuki hideout. Upon arrival, Deidara flees the scene with Gaara's body, and Naruto and Kakashi give chase while Sakura and Chiyo deal with Deidara's partner. Although he tries to use his Mangekyo Sharingan to stop Deidara, Kakashi is unable to properly aim it, and his efforts consistently miss their mark. Once Deidara is brought to ground level and Gaara is retrieved, Deidara attempts to detonate a clone of himself to eliminate Team 7. With his Mangekyo Sharingan, Kakashi sends the clone to another dimension, averting disaster.
In the aftermath of saving Gaara, Team 7 learns of a chance to meet with a spy that has infiltrated Orochimaru's ranks, meaning that there is also a chance that they can find Sasuke. Because of his use of the Mangekyo Sharingan, Kakashi is left bedridden and is unable to accompany his team. Yamato leads Team 7 in his stead, as well as new Team 7 member Sai.
After Team 7 returns from a failed attempt to bring Sasuke back to Konoha, a healthy Kakashi begins to teach Naruto how to make his own jutsu so that he can compete with Sasuke more easily. Because creating new jutsu usually takes years, time that Naruto doesn't have the patience or convenience for, Kakashi utilizes a unique training method: having Naruto train with shadow clones. Because the experiences of shadow clones are transferred to the original person once they have dispersed, by having shadow clones train alongside oneself, training can be accomplished exponentially faster than usual. Because Naruto has chakra reserves several times larger than that of any other ninja, he can create shadow clones in the thousands, meaning he can finish the training that would normally take years in a matter of days.
With this unique training method, Naruto is able to rapidly progress through the jutsu development stages, thanks in part to the exercises Kakashi is able to think up. Once Naruto moves into the phases where he needs to work by himself, Kakashi observes his progress, offering advice where he can. As Naruto begins to get the hang of how to create his new jutsu, news of Asuma Sarutobi's death at the hands of two members of Akatsuki reaches them. Wanting to help Shikamaru Nara, Choji Akimichi, and Ino Yamanaka in avenging their sensei, Kakashi leaves the job of overseeing Naruto to Yamato so that he can act as Team 10's leader.
Once Team 10 finds the Akatsuki members Hidan and Kakuzu, Shikamaru distracts and traps the two with his shadow. Kakuzu is quickly able to escape from Shikamaru, giving Kakashi a chance to use his Lightning Blade to punch a hole through Kakuzu's heart. Thinking Kakuzu is out of commission, Kakashi readies another Lightning Blade to use on Hidan, though is kicked aside by Kakuzu before he can injure the latter. Because Kakuzu has four extra hearts, he is allowed to take a number of otherwise fatal blows and still live. With this revelation, Kakashi is immediately forced on the defensive, having to contend with Hidan and Kakuzu's combined attacks. Kakuzu attempts to use a powerful blast of lightning to kill Shikamaru and Choji, though by creating a Lightning Blade with each of his hands, Kakashi is able to nullify the attack.
Realizing that the two Akatsuki members must be separated, Shikamaru traps Hidan with his shadow and draws him away so that the others can fight Kakuzu without any interference. Kakuzu begins combining his elemental attacks, thus increasing their potency, and Kakashi barely counters it with a water barrier jutsu. Eventually, Kakuzu manages to pierce Kakashi with his threads and pin him to the ground, having the intention of taking Kakashi's heart. Just as Kakuzu attempts to finish off Kakashi and the others, the remaining members of Team 7 arrive to help. Having finally developed a usable jutsu, Naruto does battle with Kakuzu and eventually manages to strike Kakuzu with his Wind Release: Spiraling Shuriken. Although Kakuzu is heavily damaged by the attack, Naruto's effort fail to kill him. As Kakuzu lies on the ground trying to contemplate how he was defeated, Kakashi gathers some lightning-based chakra to his hand and kills Kakuzu.
Kakashi brings Kakuzu's body back to Konoha so that Tsunade can perform an autopsy. After examining the damage done to Kakuzu by Naruto's attack, Tsunade finds his new jutsu to be too dangerous for use. After meeting with Naruto and helping to feed him, the new jutsu having damaged his arm, Kakashi tries to warn Naruto of the jutsu's dangers. Before he can do so, Naruto explains that he knows his own body and that everything will be okay. Kakashi accepts this, and leaves the restaurant with his team.
