Kanchipuram, Kanchi, or Kancheepuram (also sometimes Conjeevaram) is a district is in the northeast of Tamil Nadu, adjacent to the Bay of Bengal. It is bounded in the west by Vellore and Thiruvannamalai districts, in the north by Thiruvallur District and Chennai District, in the south by Viluppuram District. It lies between 11° 00' to 12° 00' North latitudes and 77° 28' to 78° 50' East longitudes. The district has a total geographical area of 4,432 km² and coastline of 57 km. The town of Kanchipuram is the district headquarters.

It had a population of 2,877,468 as of 2001. It is 53.34% urbanised as per Census 2001. [1]

The literacy of the district is 77.61%.

Mostly Vanniyar community people are occupied in this district. Sriperumbudur is located in this district.

The city of Kanchipuram has its historical significance of being the capital of the Pallava Kingdom from 4th Century AD. It is also known as the Temple City of South India (Nearly 1008 temples are found in the city). There was a famous poet by name Bharavi in the court of King Harshavardhana who praised Kanchi as the best city in that period in his poem as below.

"Pushpeshu Jaathi; Purusheshu Vishnu; Naareeshu Rambha; Nagareshu Kanchi" meaning the best among flowers is Lotus, men is Vishnu the god, women is Rambha a dancer in the court of Indra the lord of Devas, city is Kanchipuram.

It also had the unique fame of being the centre for education in India during that period. The Pallava kingdom was ruled by kings Simha Vishnu, Mahendra and Narasimha with Kanchipuram as the capital.

It is also famous for its Silk sarees whereby one could procure the wide variety of silk culture in this region.

Businesses located in this district usually serve as feeders to the gigantic Chennai district market.
