Rugby has a long history in Kenya. KRFU was formed in 1923, the same year when Nairobi District team split to form Kenya Harlequins and Nondescripts RFC, both clubs still survive (though Harlequins later folded but was reformed in 1952). Impala RFC, another traditional club was founded in the 1930's. Until mid-1970's the sport in Kenya was mainly played by expatriates. This changed once new "black" clubs, Mean Machine RFC and Mwamba RFC were formed. Today, Rugby in Kenya is played almost exclusively by indigenous players. Rugby in Kenya is mostly played in Nairobi, only handful of teams come outside the capital.

Safari Sevens is an international Rugby sevens tournament played annually in Nairobi and is the most popular rugby competition in Kenya. Kenya Cup is the highest level league in Kenya. The national cup competition, Enterprise Cup, has been played almost uninterrupted since 1930. In addition, there are number of brief tournaments traditionally participated by all major clubs.

The Kenya national rugby union team participates Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) tournaments, but has never qualified for the Rugby World Cup. The Kenyan national sevens team is a regular competitor in the World Sevens Series, occasionally winning lower-rank prizes. It has also participated the Commonwealth Games and Rugby World Cup Sevens.
