Kevin arrived in Albert Square after his son Deano had told Pat Evans that he was dead. He claimed that Deano had run away from home, but Deano claimed that Kevin had thrown him out. Kevin was about to leave England and live in Italy, but he realised he couldn't leave when he was reunited with Deano and his daughter Carly. He has since taken over the running of the car-lot in Albert Square.

During a conversation with Pat, Kevin revealed that he'd had another son, James, or Jimbo Wicks. Lively Jimbo had died of cystic fibrosis, and quiet Dean had promised to do all the things Jimbo never got to. Dean became Deano overnight, after Jimbo's death, as Jimbo was his best friend as well as his brother.

In May 2006, Kevin was falsely accused of having an affair with new Walford arrival, Chelsea Fox. It was Chelsea's protective mother, Denise, who got her wires crossed and berated an innocent Kevin at any chance she got. Since realising her mistake Denise has softened slightly and she and Kevin have embarked on a rather unconventional romance. However, Denise's fierce, uncontrollable temper is proving difficult for Kevin to control. He often unwittingly offends her and the two are regularly involved in heated arguments, which often leave Kevin exasperated and perplexed. Cracking Denise's hard exterior is proving a challenge, but Kevin is slowly beginning to see a more vulnerable, sensitive side to her, which has convinced him that she is worth persevering with. Denise ended it with Kevin when he hit Owen Turner, her ex-husband, who had been making taunts about Carly.

In July 2006, Elaine Jarvis, the manageress of Fargo's restaurant, set her sights on him. They went out for a couple of dates, and Kevin persuaded her to give Chelsea her job back, after she had sacked her. Denise and Chelsea were grateful, and Kevin and Denise started flirting again. During a night out at Fargo's, Elaine sacked Chelsea another time, and both Denise and Kevin went to see if she was all right. Chelsea left them in the staff cloakroom together, and Elaine walked in to find them passionately kissing.

He has since supported Denise through Owen beating her, and kidnapping Libby, and the couple have now moved in together with their families.

In late 2006, Kevin took his children, along with Denise and her family, and Patrick and Yolande Trueman on holiday to Dorset. Kevin's ex-wife Shirley was tipped off that they were there by Kevin's old friend Dylan. Shirley broke into Kevin's minivan, discovering where Kevin was now living. She deliberately bumped into her children and pretended to be a stranger, as they had not seen her since they were children. She later came to the holiday house and Kevin was surprised to see her. He told her to leave him, Deano and Carly alone.

On 1 January 2007, Shirley came to Walford to see Carly and Deano. She walked into Kevin, and he dragged her into the men's public toilets, where he made her beg to see the children. Carly saw them fighting outside and worked out that Shirley was her mother. After Deano had a car accident, Shirley came to visit him in hospital. Shirley decided to leave her family again, but when Deano told Kevin that he thought Shirley had left seventeen years previously because of him, Kevin made Shirley stay to put things right with Deano. She then got a job and a flat locally, saying she was staying around. She bribed Kevin with a secret that he was keeping from Deano and Carly. Shirley later told the secret to Pat Evans, and when Carly was suspicious, she and Deano forced Kevin to tell them the truth — that he was not their real father.

On 1 February, Kevin left Walford in a car after a huge row with his step daughter Carly, the day after he told her and Deano the secret. Carly lost her temper while he tried to carry on as normal and told him to get out of their lives. He sobbed in his car before driving off. His current whereabouts are unknown. However on 16 February it was revealed that Kevin had emptied the car-lot's banking account, proving that he was at least still alive.

On 9 March, Kevin was seen on Dungeness. He was planning to go to France, but when he met a man named Jed, who stole his ferry tickets and then died in a road traffic accident, Kevin decided to return to Walford. He came back in a taxi, which drove over some rubbish bags containing his clothes, which Carly had thrown out because she thought Kevin would never come back. Kevin saw Shirley and Carly leaving the pub together and went over to the car lot. Carly then found him and, although initially pleased to see him, she told him to leave them alone. Kevin then saw Shirley, who noticed he had Jed's blood on his face. She took him back to her home so he could clean up, and they started arguing, but eventually ended up kissing passionately. The next morning Kevin regretted his night of passion with Shirley and they agreed to keep it to themselves. Kevin's first move was to go to Pat at the bookies. She was stunned to see him and criticised him for leaving her with his mess, but she agreed to help him re-build the family. He then borrowed Shirley's phone and texted Deano, telling him to go to the allotments. When Kevin revealed it was him Deano was delighted and convinced him to find Carly together. Deano hid with his phone ready to take a video of Carly's reaction to seeing Kevin, but was stunned when she rejected him and mentioned their encounter before. This led to an arguement between Carly and Deano, which Kevin broke up, and he and Deano left. Later on Kevin entered The Vic to many stunned faces and sat down with Deano and Pat. Carly joined them later on and they eventually came to a truce and all agreed to be a family again, but Kevin didn't realise Chelsea saw him sitting down. Later he proceeded to Pat's to try and re-build his relationship with Denise. He was greeted with delight by Libby but he was stunned to hear Denise knew he was back already. He then talked to Denise and despite his best efforts she let her anger take control and shut the door on him. The next day at a pub quiz, Pat and Yolande joined forces to get Kevin and Denise on the same team. Denise initially walked out but Kevin convinced her to return. Afterwards Shirley ranted to the whole pub about recent events and then told Denise to do everyone a favour and marry Kevin. The next day Kevin proposed to Denise properly at the post office but she turned him down. However, later on when she went back to Pat's to collect the rest of her possessions, Denise found the ring Kevin had offered to her and tried it on. She tried to take it off when Kevin returned home, but she couldn't get it off and hid it from him. Kevin told Denise he just wanted her to move back in and she agreed, but he eventually found the ring stuck on her finger. After some childish bickering, the pair agreed to give marriage a go.

The Daily Mirror's television critic Tony Stewart has criticised Phil Daniels' acting skills by dubbing the character "Shouty Man Kevin".[1]
