Khālistān (Punjabi: ਖਾਲਿਸਤਾਨ), meaning "The Land of the Pure", was the name given to a proposed nation-state by self appointed President Jagjit Singh Chauhan, encompassing the present Pakistani and Indian states of Punjab and all Punjabi-speaking areas contiguous to its borders. It was largely instigated by Sikh leaders who believed they, like Muslims in India, should get a new state even though there are more muslims in India than Pakistan or Bangladesh He predicted that there would be a Khalistan in 2007, but has since changed his mind.
