Khālistān (Punjabi: ਖਾਲਿਸਤਾਨ), meaning "The Land of the Pure", was the name given to a proposed nation-state by self appointed President Jagjit Singh Chauhan, encompassing the present Pakistani and Indian states of Punjab and all Punjabi-speaking areas contiguous to its borders. The proposed state was fought for through the Khalistan movement. It was largely instigated by Sikh leaders who believed they, like Muslims in India, should get a new state even though there are more muslims in India than Pakistan or Bangladesh He predicted that there would be a Khalistan in 2007, but has since changed his mind.
