Ki-Adi-Mundi was a wise Jedi Knight and Jedi Council member at the time of the Clone Wars. Notably, he was invited into the Council after the fall of Master Micah Giiett during the Yinchorri conflict, at the urging of Master Mace Windu who was not keen on the other candidate being considered at that time, namely Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Hailing from the planet Cerea, he survived the Battle of Geonosis, fighting alongside other such luminaries as Yoda and Mace Windu. He contributed in the end by rescuing other Jedi, like Kit Fisto, by grabbing them and putting them on board while deflecting blaster shots with Mace Windu.
Master Ki-Adi was once the apprentice of the enigmatic Jedi Master known as the Dark Woman, but he later came under the tutelage of Yoda. For a brief time during the Clone Wars, Ki-Adi-Mundi took over as Anakin Skywalker's surrogate master when Obi-Wan Kenobi was presumed dead after the Battle of Jabiim.
Ki-Adi-Mundi was part of a Jedi strike force (group consisting of Master Daakman Barrek, Padawan Sha'a Gi, Tarr Seirr, K'Kruhk, Aayla Secura and Shaak Ti) that went to Hypori to destroy a droid factory. Unfortunately, their ship was shot out of the sky and all surviving clone troopers were killed by super battle droids. General Grievous then made his introduction by attacking the Jedi. Despite the fact that the Jedi outnumbered Grievous, they barely fended off his attacks. Ki-Adi-Mundi, Shaak Ti, Aayla Secura, and K'Kruhk were the only survivors as Daakman Barrek, Sha'a Gi, and Tarr Seirr were killed by Grievous.
Like all Cereans, his binary brain made him extremely logical and insightful, and allowed him to uniquely weigh decisions involving matters of the Force, both light and dark. Also characteristic of his species, his coordination was somewhat impaired, but compensated for by heightened intuition.
In the Expanded Universe, Ki-Adi-Mundi was regarded as a Jedi of remarkable skills and power. In the Dark Horse comic book "Outlander", Ki-Adi-Mundi is summoned by the Jedi Council to investigate if Sharad Hett, a Jedi assumed to be dead, was indeed alive. The Jedi Council believed that Sharad Hett was alive in Tatooine, and that he was the leader of a Tusken Raiders' tribe. Sharad Hett was described by members of the Council as the most fearless and dedicated knight of his age.
The information concerning the reappearance of Sharad Hett arise shortly after the murder of Qui-Gon Jinn by the Sith Lord Darth Maul, so the Council deemed very important to find out if Hett was still alive, since he could either be of great help to the Republic in the developing crisis, but, if he were embracing the dark side, he would be a powerful weapon in the hands of the Sith Lords.
At the time of his appointment in dealing with Hett, Ki-Adi-Mundi asked why he was chosen for the task and no other member of the Order. Yoda replied to him: "Of all living Jedi, have you only the skills to defeat Shared Hett." As others members of the Council could be sent to find Hett, Yoda also chose Ki-Adi-Mundi because he was not acquainted with him personally and no personal feelings could arise that may impair his judgment if the killing of Hett was needed.
In the last days of the Clone Wars, Ki-Adi-Mundi went to the planet of Mygeeto to fight the Separatists. It was here that, on the execution of Order 66, Ki-Adi-Mundi was killed. Fired on by his own troops, his death was echoed across the galaxy, as from far away, Palpatine all but wiped out the Jedi in hours. Although he deflected a little of the gunfire and managed to kill a trooper, caught off his guard and under attack from all directions(droids and clones), Ki-Adi-Mundi’s formidable lightsaber skills failed him, and he was shot by his clone troopers all over his body.
- Ki-Adi-Mundi was one of the few Jedi allowed to marry and have children, due to his planet's low birth-rate (Star Wars Insider #87: Order 66).
- According to The Art of Star Wars Episode I, the design of this character was a reinterpretation of the elder Obi-Wan Kenobi, fitted with whale-like characteristics.
- In Revenge of the Sith, Anakin Skywalker states that the Jedi Council has never had a member who was not a Jedi Master; this apparently conflicts with The Phantom Menace, in which Ki-Adi-Mundi is only a Jedi Knight but is a member of the Jedi Council. The StarWars.com Databank file for Ki-Adi features a revised EU entry which resolves this, stating that he was undergoing the process of becoming a Master when he joined the Council. [1]
- His name comes from the Latin word "mundus", meaning "refined", perhaps alluding to his lightsaber combat.
Ki-Adi-Mundi is a great Jedi Knight and Jedi Council member, being the third most powerful next to Master Windu and Master Yoda. He is well known for his strength in the force, trained by Master Yoda himself, and his natural leadership abilities. He is a formidable opponent, he was forced to face Grievous and survive, and even survived the Battle of Geonosis.
Ki-Adi-Mundi was one of the few (at the time of the Clone Wars) practitioners of Makashi, a form of lightsaber combat designed for use in a lightsaber-to-lightsaber duel. It should be noted that though Makashi was difficult to defend against blaster-fire with, Ki-Adi-Mundi managed to deflect several bolts fired at him by his treacherous troopers before falling.
- In the video game, Lego Star Wars, the player can buy Ki-Adi in Dexter's Diner, which allows the player to play as a Lego version of him (with a typically long head). He makes a more substantial appearance in Star Wars Battlefront II, where players can control him for a brief period as he and a battalion of Clone Troopers seize a valuable power source on Mygeeto prior to the execution of Order 66. His lightsaber skills were so good that master Yoda picked him to capture General Grevious. Out of the 5 Jedi sent, he was the only one to not be wounded.
