Kimo Leopoldo (born January 4, 1964) is a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, often billed as simply Kimo, who was born in Munich, Germany and fights out of Hawaii, U.S.A. He made his MMA debut at UFC 3 in 1994, and continues to fight today.

Kimo's fighting style is best described as freestyle, with a mixture of boxing and grappling techniques. He was erroneously credited with a black belt in Taekwondo in his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut at UFC 3 (He later admitted to lying in order to be granted the opportunity to fight). Kimo is well known for entering the UFC 3 tournament carrying a large cross on his back, and for his Christian mindset and tattoos. His manager, Joe Son, also carried a giant cross to the ring in his fights.

In UFC 3, he lost to UFC 1 and UFC 2 champion Royce Gracie but succeeded in exhausting him severely enough so that his corner threw in the towel at the start of his next match. Steve Jennum, an alternate, went on to win the tournament after one fight. Kimo returned at UFC 8 and fought Ken Shamrock, who submitted Kimo by knee bar early in the fight. Kimo vs Sakuraba in 1996 was a worked fight.

Kimo would go on to take wins over Paul Varelans, pro wrestler Bam Bam Bigelow, Brian Johnston, and the legendary Kazushi Sakuraba(although many suspect this of being a worked fight), early in his career. At UFC 16, Kimo would lose a decision to Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, and did not fight again for four years.

After a warm up fight against Tim Lajcik in the WFA in 2002, Kimo made his return to the UFC at UFC 43, where he quickly defeated Tank Abbott by arm triangle choke. Kimo went on to fight in the main event of UFC 48, where he again took on MMA veteran Ken Shamrock. Kimo was knocked out in the first round from a knee to the head by Shamrock.

Kimo has also fought in K-1 kickboxing in Japan. In a famous fight, he came very close to beating the massive 350lb Bob Sapp. Today Kimo still fights, having fought in both Rumble on the Rock and PRIDE Bushido in 2005.

In July 2006, Leopoldo was slated to fight former UFC Heavyweight Champion and King of Pancrase Bas Rutten in the WFA, but just two days before the event, Kimo tested positive for the banned substance Stanozolol, a form of anabolic steroids. As a result, he has been suspended by the California State Athletic Commission from the event. Earlier in his career, he was handed a six-month fight suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, as well as a $5,000 fine following his contest with Ken Shamrock at UFC 48 for testing positive for Stanozolol and illegal stimulants. In his two most recent fights, Kimo lost to Dave Legeno by submission. Then lost to Wes Sims by TKO in X-1. Rumor has it that he will go back to Pride and fight Ikuhisa Minowa in a rematch or fight in other MMA organizations. [1]
