Commander Kirk Lippold, USN, was Captain of the USS Cole on October 12, 2000 when the ship was attacked and bombed by Al-Qaeda terrorists. Lippold assumed command of the Cole on June 25, 1999 [1] and served until he was relieved on March 9, 2001. [2]
On August 21, 2006, the Secretary of the Navy and Chief of Naval Operations stated that Lippold will not be promoted to Captain based on his performance prior to the USS Cole attack in Yemen in October 2000. He will next be available for promotion in 2007. [3]
A Navy investigation concluded in 2001 that Lippold and his crew probably could not have prevented the attack and should not be punished.
A Navy promotion board had selected Lippold for promotion to captain in 2002 but he was not confirmed by the Senate, and his status had been in limbo since then. The Secretary of the Navy decided to strike Lippold's name from the promotion list, meaning he will remain at his current rank of commander.
If he chooses to stay in the Navy he will become eligible to be considered again for promotion early next year, Navy officials said. Lippold currently is serving on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Mike Mullen, at the Pentagon. [4]
Lippold is a 1981 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. [5]
