Korea University is one of the so-called "SKY" schools in Korea. The acronym is the first initials of the three most prestigious and highly desired universities in Korea: Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University. Admissions into the universities are so competitive that a degree from one of the SKY schools has indeed been regarded as a ticket to success and honor in Korean society.([1])
Korea University was under the spotlight when it became one of the world’s top 200 universities. The Times, in its Higher Education Supplement, put Korea University 184th out of the world universities. The Social Science College of Korea University (KU) ranked 66th while the Liberal Arts College the 89th. The Times has ranked 2375 universities worldwide based on criteria including: scholars` evaluation on peers; number of papers cited at other universities; number of students per professor; number of foreign students; number of foreign instructors. A special consideration put into the selection this year was the preference by main companies when hiring new employees. According to the results, universities from 31 countries worldwide were ranked within the top 200s. U.S.A had the most schools with 54 universities, England came 2nd with 24 and Australia 3rd with 17. On the other hand, Korea saw 3 universities, including KU, on the list. Seoul National University was ranked 98th and KAIST 143rd. In 2006, a newer version of the world university ranking was released by the Times, and the rank of Korea University leaped into 150th from the previous rank, 184th. The rivalry of Korea University and Yonsei University, top two private institutions in the nation, is nationally renowned. Furthermore, unlike Seoul National University, the private universities are proud of and renowned for their spirit, traditions, and the gold balance of academics and athletics. So intense is the rivalry between them that any of the crimson-attired supporters of Korea University identifies the league as the “Ko-Yon Games,” while the opponent party in blue would call it the other way around. Five events (of baseball, basketball, ice hockey, rugby, and soccer) are held every year. [3]
Welcoming the centennial anniversary, KU has carried out ‘Global KU Project’ focusing on training world-competitive students, creating high-end infrastructure, enhancing research and investment and keeping administration abreast with the global standard. All of these efforts are contributed to KU’s joining the world’s top tier. KU aims at becoming world’s top 100 schools by 2010, which is likely to come to life earlier, given the recent designation of one of the world's top 200 universities.
In 2003, Korea University was the only university in the nation recognised for outstanding achievement in internationalization. This evaluation of 121 domestic universities was conducted by the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development and included a competitive application process and strict on-site inspections. KU received high marks for its emphasis on the standardization of English through expansion of English-mediated courses and innovative projects for globalization. This is the result of the determination and drive of the university to reach its goal of becoming a world-renowned university. The Global KU Project is now being more actively pursued than ever before, with the active recognition and financial support of the Korean government.
