The Kottonmouth Kings began years ago. [1][2] D-Loc and Johnny Richter, being both of Irish decent; are both natives of Placentia, California, meeting each other at the young age of eight years. D-Loc met Daddy X after X would constantly attend his college basketball games. Soon enough D-Loc and Johnny Richter began to hang out with Brad X on a more daily basis. After one day of hanging out in Richter's VW van, Richter as the silent type began to rap to the classic hip-hop tracks from the radio by LL Cool J , shocking both X and Loc. After hitting every rhyme, Daddy X, decided that they should record some songs, and try to perform at the local pubs bars, and clubs. Afterwards, he also began to sing note for note on songs from such classic rock groups as Led Zeppelin. Originally when they started the group it was called the PTB(P-Town Ballers), after the basketball team they were all in, and included Johnny Richter, Dustin D-Loc Miller, and Saint Dog. Brad X booked them to open for shows, mainly punk rock shows, at which they didn't get a very good reception because not only were they rapping, but they were also white rappers, which at the time weren't particularly very popular.
As popularity grew, the Kottonmmouth Kings began to develop their own style of music, which they dubbed "Rip-Hop", a combination of Punk Rock, Rock N Roll, Hip Hop, and Rap music. This became their signature sound.
The message of the Kottonmouth Kings is perhaps what sets them apart from most other artists. Preaching Peace, Love, and Freedom, the Kottonmouth Kings have become one of the front runners for what some consider "Freedom Music". Their songs often touch subjects of goverment misdeeds and misinformation, the War of Drugs, the War on Terror, taxes, education, and poverty. However, because of their name and reputation, the Kings have been typecasted as simply a "stoner" band, which, although true to the name (and proud of it, as shown by their song "Proud to Be a Stoner", featured on their 2007 album Cloud Nine).
Rip-Hop
Richter had recorded a mixtape with PTB. On it were the only tracks Richter, Loc, and Saint were all on together until 2005's "Sub Noize Souljaz" album. Richter left the band before recording "The Hidden Stash" because he had a warrant for his arrest for the distribution of marijuana, in which Brad "Daddy" X replaced him in the band. Years later he returned, replacing Saint Dog. It is suspected that Saint wanted to go to strictly hip-hop, while Daddy X and Loc wanted to keep the punk-rock roots in.
In 2003, Kottonmouth Kings toured with the Insane Clown Posse, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and Tech N9ne on the Wicked Wonka Tour. A posse cut titled "Thug Pit" was recorded featuring the artists on the tour once the tour was complete.
In 2007, Kottonmouth Kings toured on the Strange Noize Tour. The tour was said to be one of the biggest underground tours to be set. The tour included Kottonmouth Kings and Tech N9ne as the headline. Also, to perform were the Subnoize Souljaz, Hed P.E., and Blaze Ya Dead Homie.
