Kurnool pronunciation  is a city in Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh state of southern India. It is the administrative seat of Kurnool district, and former capital of Andhra State (not present AP), the old Andhra was carved out of Madras State in 1950's and present day Andhra Pradesh was result of merger of Nizam, Andhra, parts of Bombay, Madya Pradesh, Orissa and MP regions.

The original name of Kurnool was Kandenaolu, literally "lubricating village". Many bullock carts which came from far-off places to dig sand in the rivers that ran on both sides of the village stopped to lubricate their wheels. It became Kurnool when the British took over the town.

Kurnool as a village has existed for 2000 years. It is the only inhabited place between two rivers. Kurnool was a major fort during the reign of the Vijayanagar emperors. There is still a grand watchtower called Konda Reddy Buruju to testify the glory it enjoyed in Vijayanagar times, but it is not certain how the watchtower got its name. According to one old story the fort was built by the king Konda Reddy.

During the British Raj Kurnool expanded and schools, churches, etc. were built.Karnool is the former capital of Andhra State (not present AP), the old Andhra was carved out of Madras State in 1950's and present day Andhra Pradesh was result of merger of Nizam, Andhra, parts of Bombay, Madya Pradesh, Orissa and MP regions.

Kurnool is located at 15.83° N 78.05° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 274 metres (898 feet). Kurnool is the first capital city of Andhrapradesh.Kurnool lies on the banks of River Tungabhadra[A tributary of River Krishna].Some Areas in this region face severe drought.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Kurnool had a population of 267,739. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Kurnool has an average literacy rate of 63%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 57%. In Kurnool, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Kurnool is connected to most cities and towns in Andhra Pradesh and to Bangalore and Chennai by the state road transport corporation (APSRTC). National Highway 7 connects it to Hyderabad (210 km, 3.5 hours), Anantapur (140 km, 2.5 hours) and Bangalore (360 km, 6 hours). For movement within Kurnool, there are private city bus services available. However, these are occasional. Auto service, which is the best service, and rickshaws are also available.

Kurnool lies on the Hyderabad–Bangalore railway line. There are also frequent passenger trains to Hyderabad, Delhi,Chennai,Mumbai and Hubli.The 4 important railway stations in Kurnool District are Kurnool Town,Adoni,Nandyala and Dhone junction.

Hyderabad is the nearest airport.
