Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Two elderly ladies, who are sisters living in 1936 in Cornwall near the shore, find the young man Andrea (Daniel Brühl) washed up on the beach, and lovingly take him in their house and care for him while he recovers. It turns out that he is from Poland and that he plays the violin very well. They fall a little in love with him and are sometimes jealous of each other, and of a young Russian woman Olga Daniloff (Natascha McElhone), whom the villagers suspect to be a spy. She is the sister of a famous musician. She and Andrea travel to London to meet her brother. Although Andrea likes the ladies and knows that they will be disappointed when he leaves, he goes to London anyway to start a career. There is not even an opportunity to say goodbye. Later the women attend a performance by Andrea in London.
