The first Lakland prototype began creation in January 1994 and was first shown at the NAMM show in July of 1994. The prototype was a blend of a Fender Jazz bass and Music Man Stingray. It was made of ash with a quilted maple top and featured a quartersawn rock maple neck (no graphite reinforcement) with a birdseye maple fingerboard. The headstock was altered after pressure from Fender to change it due to similarities. The prototype featured the now classic Lakland oval bridge plate but was made from aluminum which Hugh McFarland felt offered a better sound. This was later changed to chrome plated steel.

Current US models include 4-94. 55-94, Decade, Bob Glaub, Joe Osborn, Jerry Scheff, Darryl Jones, Duck Dunn, and the Mike Tobias co-created Hollowbody.

In 2001 Lakland instroduced the Korean made Skyline Series. Developed with the help of importer-exporter Westheimer Corp., the midrange Skyline Series is constructed using North American wood and features the same design as the US basses, but is assembled overseas. Once the instrument arrives in Chicago, the company's builders work to install its electronics and make sure the frets are leveled within specification of Lakland's US models.

The Lakland Shoreline Series is manufactured to Lakland USA specs in Japan and is available for sale there exclusively.
