Laura Moffatt

Laura Jean Moffatt (born 9 April 1954) is a politician in the United Kingdom. She is Labour Party member of Parliament for Crawley, and was first elected in 1997, after boundary changes led to most of the rural parts of the constituency being removed to neighbouring constituencies. She was also re-elected in 2001 and 2005, although on the latter occasion she had the smallest majority in the country at a mere 37 votes. She had previously challenged the seat in the 1992 general election, but lost out to Nicholas Soames.

Moffat had previously been Mayor of Crawley and a long-serving councillor (1984-1996) on Crawley Borough Council. A Registered Staff Nurse before entering Parliament Moffatt has a husband, Colin, and three adult children, Russell, Alistair and Edward. Laura has served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to various Ministers and is currently PPS to Education Secretary Alan Johnson (2006-present).

In the General Election of 2005, she was elected with the slimmest majority of any member, winning the seat by just 37 votes.
