Lee Clark (born October 27, 1972 in Wallsend, England), is a professional footballer and coach currently playing for Newcastle United. He is most often seen in central midfield.
In his early career, he was commonly known as 'Jigsaw' among the Geordie faithful, because he often 'went to pieces in the box'. This, however didn't seem to affect Clark's popularity during his initial 9 year stint at Newcastle United, as the fans appreciated his genuine passion for the club in a world where money was taking over.
Prior to the 2005/06 season, Clark returned to his first club, Newcastle United, coaching and playing on a month-by-month contract. He was allowed to leave Fulham after his contract expired in the summer of 2005 - to mixed reactions from Fulham fans, as he had been named club captain for the 2004/05 season and was Fulham's longest-serving player at the time.
He is perhaps most famous for being photographed wearing a t-shirt with the words "Sad Mackem Bastards" at the 1999 FA Cup final. As a Newcastle fan this was hardly controversial, but as a current Sunderland player (Mackem being a nickname for people from the city) it was a sackable offence. He never played for Sunderland again.
Clark scored one goal for Newcastle in the 2005-2006 season, the crucial equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough. His Newcastle United goal tally reaching 26 in all competitions.
On June 1, 2006, newly appointed Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder appointed Clark as a first team coach, on the same day Kevin Bond was made assistant manager, although he is still registered as a player for the 2006-07 season in case of an emergency.
Clark's successes as a player include scoring a hatrick for England Schoolboys at Wembley Stadium in 1988, getting Newcastle promoted to the Premiership in 1993 and helping them finish runners-up two seasons in a row. He was also in the Sunderland (1999) and Fulham (2001) teams which won promotion to the Premiership.
Clark is currently Reserve Team Manager and First Team Coach at NUFC
