Leeds, Maine

Leeds is a town in Androscoggin County, Maine, United States with a population of 2001 as of the 2000 U.S. census. It is included in both the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine Metropolitan New England City and Town Area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 112.5 km² (43.4 mi²). 104.5 km² (40.3 mi²) of it is land and 8.0 km² (3.1 mi²) of it (7.11%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 2,001 people, 736 households, and 548 families residing in the town. The population density was 19.2/km² (49.6/mi²). There were 856 housing units at an average density of 8.2/km² (21.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.10% White, 0.20% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 0.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.50% of the population.

There were 736 households out of which 37.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.2% were married couples living together, 6.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 101.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $37,993, and the median income for a family was $42,557. Males had a median income of $30,245 versus $24,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,602. About 5.9% of families and 9.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.7% of those under age 18 and 9.7% of those age 65 or over.

  • Leeds borders the Androscoggin River and Androscoggin Lake. Running between these two bodies of water, through Leeds, is the Dead River. This small river has the unique ability to run two ways, depending on whether the Androscoggin Lake or River is higher.
