Lees-McRae College
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lees-McRae College is a college in Banner Elk, North Carolina.
Lees-McRae College was founded in Banner Elk as an all-female normal school and high school in 1899, named McRae Institute by founder Reverend Edgar Tufts, a Presbyterian minister. An all-male branch was founded during 1907 in Plumtree, North Carolina, which coincided with the renaming to Lees-McRae Institute. In 1927 fire destroyed most of the Plumtree all-male facility, so the two campuses were merged together at the Banner Elk location. In 1931 the institute was renamed to Lees-McRae College, phased out its adjoining high school to become a junior college. In 1990 Lees-McRae extended their curriculum to become a four-year institution granting bachelors degrees.
