Lemon Drop Kid

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lemon Drop Kid (born 1996) is a champion Thoroughbred racehorse. He is among many stakes-winning thoroughbreds to be descended from Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew. Seattle Slew is the sire of his dam, Charming Lassie. Kingmambo was his sire, himself a descendant of Mr. Prospector, who has a very successful progeny as well, throwing such Classic winners as Afleet Alex, Funny Cide, Smarty Jones and Fusaichi Pegasus among Lemon Drop Kid's cousins.

Lemon Drop Kid played the spoiler to Charismatic's 1999 Triple Crown run, winning the Belmont Stakes that year while Charismatic broke down and finished third. He finished his career with 10 wins, 3 places and 3 shows in 24 career starts, and total race earnings of $3,245,370.

Lemon Drop Kid currently stands in stud at Lane's End Farms, where he commands US$20,000 for a single live cover breeding. His first crop of foals in 2005 produced three stakes winners. His second crop in 2006 produced three more stakes winners, including the filly Lemons Forever, the longshot winner of the 2006 Kentucky Oaks.
