Linguicide or Linguistic Genocide is a term describing the intentional causing of the death of a language. It is also used as a derogatory term to describe unintentional death of languages through competition and other mechanisms.
Some of the mechanisms leading to the death of languages include:
- imposition or prohibition of a language by state authorities
- linguistic competition (e.g. English vs. French in scientific publications)
- natural decline in populations that speak the language
- a colonial era language overwhelming the indigenous people's languages, i.e. The Americas and Oceania.
