These airports are all operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Teterboro is the main general aviation reliever for New York City, while the other three airports concentrate on scheduled passenger service. LaGuardia handles only domestic flights, while JFK, Newark, and Teterboro all handle both domestic and international flights.

Westchester and Trenton-Mercer both handle some scheduled passenger service. Additionally, Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip (KISP) handles domestic commercial and general aviation. Situated near the Ronkonkoma station of the Long Island Rail Road, outside of New York terminal airspace, it is still represented as a New York airport by Southwest Airlines. Although Stewart International has the infrastructure to support large aircraft (and even the space shuttle), it currently has only domestic commercial service. The airport's lease was bought by the Port Authority in January 2007 after a period of unprofitable privatization. Essex County Airport in New Jersey is the "untapped" diamond of the aviation world on the East Coast. Located only 15 mintues from NYC, with direct transit line to downtown Manhattan it is a great stop for private and commercial traffic looking to stay away from congested fields, but still expect the service of AVITAT. Essex County Airport is the most popular General Aviation field in the New York City area, primarily used by trainers and light jets. It also stands as the possible main entry point for VLJ aircraft into the NYC Class B area.

The remaining airports serve primarily general aviation, and provide service for both New York City and their local areas.
