List of extinct animals

A large number of historical orders are extinct, for example dinosaurs, pterosaurs and ammonites. Many of these orders went extinct at the same time during one of the several extinction events that have occurred in the Earth's history. The number of extinct species greatly outnumbers the number of living species.
