Political parties are illegal in the Gulf state of Kuwait. They have been banned continuously since independence in 1961. Nonetheless, the constitution itself does not explicitly prohibit parties: the prohibition is a matter of law.
Candidates for election (e.g., to the National Assembly) stand in a personal capacity. In practice, however, several political groups act as de facto parties: Bedouins, merchants, Sunni and Shi'a activists, and secular leftists and nationalists.
