List of political parties in Western Sahara

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Political parties in Western Sahara lists political parties in Western Sahara.

The legal status of territory and question of sovereignty is unresolved. The territory is contested by Morocco and the Algeria backed Polisario Front.

The government of Morocco is a monarchy, with a parliament of elected officials. The Morocco-controlled parts of Western Sahara are divided into several provinces treated as integral parts of the kingdom. For a list of political parties active in the Morocco-controlled parts see the List of political parties in Morocco.

According to its constitution, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) is a form of single-party state as long as it is not in control of its territory. The organization backing the republic is the Polisario Front, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Saguia el-Hamra and Río de Oro (Frente Popular de Liberación de Saguía el Hamra y Río de Oro), but it has declared that it will either transform into a normal political party among others, or split into several parties in the eventuality of an independent Western Sahara (pointing to the example of East Timor).
