Live In Hyde Park is the first live album released by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The recordings took place over three record-breaking nights at Hyde Park, in London (June 19th, 20th & June 25, 2004) whilst the band were in the midst of a European stadium tour, playing to some of the largest venues in history. The entire tour garnered much critical acclaim and the decision to release a live documentation of these shows remains a wise choice.

Of the eight studio albums by the Chili Peppers that were released before this live CD, only three are actually represented in this album's set list - Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication and By the Way (The song "Fortune Faded" however did feature on the band's Greatest Hits compilation). A dominating nine songs from Californication are included whereas only two are taken from their breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik ("Under the Bridge" and "Give It Away" - the album's best-selling singles). Following this CD, songs from By the Way would begin to play a much smaller role in Chili Peppers concerts due to the complication of songs played live.

The absence from any tracks recorded before Blood Sugar Sex Magik (specifically ones from The Uplift Mofo Party Plan and Mother's Milk) was seen as a surprise. It has been revealed that guitarist John Frusciante dislikes his guitarwork on Mother's Milk, which is why that album's songs are rarely played. However, the omission of any Uplift Mofo tracks (such as "Me & My Friends") is puzzling, but not to a vast extent because of the new material the Chili Peppers have at their disposal for use at live shows.

It is well known that Frusciante, as well as the other three members, is not a fan of music by the Red Hot Chili Peppers taken from the Dave Navarro era (the band's guitarist from 1994 through to 1997) as it does not suit his guitar style, which is why no tracks from One Hot Minute, Navarro's only album with the band, have been played live since his departure (with the exception of the song "Pea", played and sung by bassist Flea only.

The cover features the tattoo on singer Anthony Kiedis ' back.
