Llay
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Llay is a village in the town of Wrexham, North Wales. It borders with several other villages like Gwersyllt and Gresford. Prior to the 1960s, Llay was a mining village with the pit being a big employer for the village.
There is a country park in Llay called Alyn Waters Country Park, which has a sister country park in Gwersyllt of the same name. At the Country Park is the nine hole pitch and putt and driving range called Fore Golf, which reopened in 2003 after previously shutting down in 1999.
There are three churches in the village of Llay, including St. Martin's.
Ironically, there are exactly the same amount of pubs in the village as churches. The three pubs are the Royal British Legion, The Crown Pub and Llay Miners Welfare (or Miners Welfare Institute).
The Miners Welfare, as well as being a pub and members club, provides sports, social and business facilities such as cabaret rooms, conferences and sports grounds for hire. The Welfare had its grand opening in 1931 after negotiations in 1929 for monies to build a Miners Institute with sports facilities and playground (read more on the Welfare's history on their official site). The Welfare is currently seeking grants and funding for improvements to benefit Llay and the surrounding area, with some success so far: a lift for accessibility, new front foyer, a MUGA AstroTurf pitch and improvements to the conference rooms including internet access.
There is a Industrial Estate in Llay, which includes a Sharp Electronics factory.
