Loon op Zand (pronunciation (help·info)) is a municipality and a town in the southern Netherlands.

During the first Dutch census, held by the first King of Holland - Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (1806), the brother of Napoléon Bonaparte, when all inhabitants were registered by name and birthdate, the family name 'van Loon' came into being. Prior to this time, people were only known by their familiar (first or personal) name. When the census required additional name information, many people used the place name as their second name or surname. The other town in Brabant with a similar name was Overloon and most people with the surname 'van Loon' can trace their roots to either town.
