Loughborough Junction railway station is in Brixton, in the London Borough of Lambeth, between Elephant & Castle and Herne Hill, and is served by Southeastern and the First Capital Connect line on the Sutton Loop.

The station began life on the spur line from Canterbury Road near Brixton that connected the South London Line with the line running to the south. Almost on the Loughborough end of the junction was the first station, called Loughborough Road: it opened in October 1864. On 1 December 1872, additional platforms were built on the main line, and on a second spur to the east, the latter being called the Cambria platforms after a nearby road. At that date the whole station was renamed Loughborough Junction. (The first external link below gives a very clear idea of the station site.)

During World War I many lesser-used suburban services were closed, to preserve the railways' ability to service the war effort: the first set of platforms at the junction closed on 14 March 1916, and were never re-opened. When lines in the Southern Railway suburban network were electrified some rationalisation of services again took place, and the Cambria platforms closed on 12 July 1925.

Although this left the station with no junction, the name has remained. The current (2005) proposals to construct the extensions to the East London line might well put the clock back, since the South London Line passes above the station and is part of the scheme. The present station master is the long-serving Stanley Mills.

If you stand in the middle of the junction of Loughborough Road, Hinton Road and Coldharbour Lane, a few yards from the station, you can see six railway bridges.
