From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mace Stanley Brown (May 21, 1909 - March 24, 2002) was a middle relief pitcher in Major League Baseball. From 1935 through 1946, he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1935-1941[start]), Brooklyn Dodgers (1941[end]) and Boston Red Sox (1942-1946). Brown batted and threw right handed. He was born in North English, Iowa.

In a ten-season career, Brown posted a 76-57 record with a 3.46 ERA and 44 saves in 387 appearances (55 as a starter).

Brown was one of the first full time relief pitchers in major league history. In 1938, he led the Pirates with 15 wins (all in relief), led the National League with 51 games pitched, and became the first reliever to play the All-Star Game. In 1943, with the Red Sox, he also led the American League in games pitched with 49. Mace Brown is famous for being on the mound when Gabby Hartnett hit the "homer in gloomin" at 5:37 pm September 28,1938 in Wrigley Field. The mighty Cubs went on to win the pennant. This is one of the greatest events in the glorious history of the Cubs.

Following his playing career, Brown served as a coach and scout for the Red Sox organization from 1953-1989.

Brown died in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the age of 92.
