Madjid Bougherra (Arabic: مجيد بوغرة) (born October 7, 1982) is an Algerian professional footballer who currently plays for Charlton Athletic, having signed for the club from Sheffield Wednesday on 27 January 2007 for £2.2m on a four-and-a-half year contract. [1]

Bougherra signed for English Championship club Crewe Alexandra F.C. on loan from FC Gueugnon on 31 January 2006.[2] Bougherra also managed to get into the Crewe record books, as his agent, Charles Collymore, had recommended the Algerian defender to the South Cheshire club and was given £5,000 by the club, making him the first agent to receive a fee from Crewe.[3]

He made his debut on 25 February 2006 against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Alexandra Stadium, which Crewe won 2-1. He scored during his fourth game for Crewe, at home in the 4-1 win over Coventry City. After the game, many of the club's supporters were urging manager Dario Gradi to sign the defender on a permanent basis.

On 24 April 2006, Bougherra confirmed he wouldn't be playing for Crewe past his loan period and was looking for a new club. Despite his best efforts, he couldn't stop Crewe from being relegated to League One. He bid an emotional farewell to the Crewe fans when, after the game against Leeds United, he went to the 800 Crewe fans that had travelled up to Leeds and applauded them after the rest of the players had gone back down the tunnel.

Bougherra's performances at Crewe had attracted interest from a number of clubs in England, including some from the Premiership. However, on 19 May 2006, he agreed terms with Championship club Sheffield Wednesday, with Wednesday paying FC Gueugnon an undisclosed six-figure sum that according to former manager Paul Sturrock "is not as much as [the £300,000 that] has been quoted in the papers."[4] Madjid made a big impact at Hillsborough, winning the Player of the Month award in only his second month at the club and captaining the team for the first time against QPR at home in October 2006.

During the 2007 January transfer window, Bougherra was linked with many Premiership clubs and after his club turned down a £1.3 million Charlton Athletic.[5], The Sun reported that Bougherra told Wednesday manager Brian Laws he wished to leave Hillsborough in favour of a move to the addicks.[6] Other clubs linked with Bougherra include Reading, who according to the Daily Mail had offered £3 million for the player,[7] and Everton, and chairman Dave Allen also claimed Birmingham were interested.[8] Charlton Athletic have since made an improved offer of £2.5 million which has been accepted by the Sheffield board. Bougherra moved to The Valley on January 28, 2007, becoming the third signing of new manager Alan Pardew, the other two signs being Welshman Ben Thatcher and China's Zheng Zhi.[9]
