Mahis (Arabic: ماحص) is a Jordanian town 10 Km West of Amman. Its population exceeds 14,000. Most of Mahis population descend from the Al-Abbadi tribe[1] [2]. (Arabic: العبادي). It is located over a series of mountains with a height of over 800 metres[3]., with panoramic views on the Jordanian valley, West Bank, and you can easily see Jerusalem’s walls on the horizon in a clear summer sunset. Mahis is known for its beautiful orchards and its water fountains and springs which exceed 270 within its territories. Perhaps the most famous one is the Fountain of Mahis.

In Mahis there is a shrine of the prophet Al-Khidr*, the shrine is a one room srounded by a small garden and has a green flag on top of it[4].[5]., also not far away from Mahies (2 Km West of Mahis) in an area called Wadi Shoaib ,stands the grave of prophet Shoaib [6].Prophet Shoaib is referred to "Jethro" in the Bible where he is called the "priest of Midian".

Town of Mahis is believed to emerged during the Roman period, at which time it was on the border line between the Jewish Perea and the territory of Philadelphia - Amman of the Decapolis, and in the Byzantine period between the territory of the diocesis of Gadara - es-Salt and Philadelphia [7]. From here Mahis gained its name as a border town. In Arabic the phrase ((Arabic: محص) the root of the word Mahis) (Arabic: ماحص) means check out and examine, and it was known by this name because it was a border cheek point.

Mahis has been known at the beginning of the twentieth century for is agricultural production this included wheat, barley, and tobacco. It also produced pomegranates, grapes and olives; in addition to the seasonal plantings Green beans, cucumbers and others. At the present time agricultural activities in Mahis dramatically declined, however, it still produces figs and olives in commercial quantities. The land of Mahis is rich with a number of minerals, some of its land produces raw material of Kaolin which have been used in different type of products such as the electrical insulators, different type of domastic dishes ... etc, [8] also Cement is dug out from some of Mahis territory and produced in the neighbouring city Fuhais[9][10] . The southern part of the of Mahis territory called Almeda (Arabic: الميدة) has an advantage of its mountains overlooking a large number of forest trees ,nature landscape, Dead Sea and West Bank with a clean air ,apart from Mahis being very close to the capital Amman. This has created high demand on this part of Mahis lands attracting senior authority figures and businessmen from Jordan and the other Arab countries, which contributed to the development of Mahis.

The population of Mahis is all Arabs,Most descend from Al-Abbadi Tribe (the second biggest in Jordan[11]) they are usually referred to as the clan of Al-Jbara . however, these days the name Jbara includes all the population of Mahis who descend or do not decend from Al- Abbadi Tribe [12]. Jbara includes the following sub-tribes:

  • Al- Shibly [13] ,[14],(Arabic: الشبلي).
  • Al- Shiab
  • Al- Oudat
  • Al- Iliewatt
  • Al- Rishidat
  • Al- Issa
  • Al- Shehab
  • Al- Jawaldeh (Al-Jaloudi)
  • Al- Arabiat
  • Al- Mesra’awi
  • Sa’alti
  • Other tribes

Currently Mahis is famous for the high education level between it population leading to Mahis having plenty of expertise in different academic disciplines, many of them in the public sector, some of them occupy the highest positions of Ministers, Heads of Universities .also in the private sector there is a significant number of Doctors and Business owners who have achieved success on the level of the Kingdom. A large number of people from the town as well are in the military sector with various military ranks. Here is a list of some famous people in Jordan who originate from Mahis

  • Prof. Mousa Al-Abbadi professor of Pathology at Wayne State University School of Medicine.
  • Prof. Jameel Al-Jaloudi, Dean and the founder of Planning and Management faculty at Balqa' Applied university.
  • Dr. Ayoub Al-Jawaldeh, International Expert in the United Ntions Warld Food Programme.
  • Dr. A'lian Al-Jaloudi, Head of History Department, Al al-Bayt University
  • Mohammad Al-Bakhit 2006 Taekwondo World Cup bronze medallist and 2006 Asian Games gold medallist for Male Finweight (under 54kg)
