Malaybalay, covering the area of what is now the province of Bukidnon, became a part of the province of Misamis as a municipality in 1850. The whole area was then called Malaybalay (few houses) and the people known as Bukidnons (mountain people).
Malaybalay had been known before as "Oroquita".
Malaybalay was created as a municipality on October 19, 1907. In 1910, Malaybalay became a sub-province of Agusan. It then became an independent unit, named the Province of Bukidnon with Malaybalay as the capital. Finally, on February 11, 1998, President Fidel Ramos signed the act that converted Malaybalay to a city, under Mayor Nicholas Jurolan.
When Spanish Explorers came to the central portion of the province in the late 18th century, they inquired as to the name of the town. The people replied in sputtering Visayan "walay balay" - which means "no house" in Visaya. The Spaniards mispronounced the name and repeated it as Malaybalay.
Compared with the rest of the country, the climate in Malaybalay is relatively cooler the whole year round. Rain falls at a yearly average of 2,800 millimeters (110 in) and occurs throught the year, though it is more intense during the country's rainy season from June to October.
Malaybalay City celebrates Kaamulan Festival every March. 'Kaamulan' means gathering together. This festival is the gathering of the seven tribes of the province of Bukidnon. The highlights of the said gathering includes street dancing, trade exhibit, rodeo (handled by the Malaybalay horsemen federation),motorcross, 4X4 OFFROAD challenge (handled by the Team Malaybalay ), Mountainbike Challenge (handled by the High Torque Bikers, Inc.) and the night of Bukidnon dances. The whole celebration is very colorful and many local and foreign tourists come to see the magnificent display of the rich culture of the province.
Malaybalay City is politically subdivided into 46 barangay.
