Malaysian Premier League

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Malaysian Premier League is the second-tier football league in Malaysia, it was introduced in 2004.

Between 1998 to 2003, it existed as Premier-Two league, below the top-flight Premier-One league (which was subsequently relaunched as Malaysian Super League in 2004 as well).

Between 2004 to 2006, the professional football league in Malaysia was divided into three groups:
1) First Division: Malaysian Super League
2) Second Division: Malaysian Premier League Group A
3) Second Division: Malaysian Premier League Group B

At the end of the season, the top team from each group of the Premier League is promoted to the Malaysian Super League. The team(s) which finish bottom of each group are relegated to the Premier Club Championship also known as FAM Cup. The two group champions also face off to determine the Premier League Championship.

The Premier League champions for 2006 were Kedah. They were promoted to Malaysian Super League 2006-2007 along with runners-up Malacca.
