The African Mammoth, Mammuthus africanavus, (literally, "African Ancestor Mammoth"), is among the oldest mammoth species, having first appeared around 4.8 million years ago during the Pliocene. Its fossils have been found in Pliocene deposits in Chad, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia.
