Vice-Chancellor and President
Professor Margaret Gardner is the Vice-Chancellor and President of RMIT, for higher education and vocational education and training. She is responsible for ensuring strong, effective leadership and clear direction within the university through an appropriate vision and strategic plan.

Professor Margaret Gardner took on the role of Vice-Chancellor and President in April 2005, having previously held the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Queensland. She has extensive academic experience, having held various leadership positions in Australian universities.
Armed with a first class honours degree in Economics and a PhD from the University of Sydney, Professor Gardner was an academic in the field of industrial relations before holding executive positions at Griffith University and University of Queensland. As a Fulbright postdoctoral fellow, she spent time at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cornell University, and the University of California, Berkeley.
At the University of Queensland, Professor Gardner was responsible for its teaching and learning strategy, policy and planning for information technology, a range of academic staffing matters and quality assurance. As Pro Vice-Chancellor at Griffith University, she played a leading role in the development and growth of its Business Group and a new and innovative campus dedicated to new forms of teaching and learning. She was also responsible for student access and equity planning and policy, equal employment opportunity and Indigenous student support.
Professor Gardner has been a member of a number of boards, including in the arts and education sector. She is currently a member of the Board of the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education and of the Business Industry and Higher Education Collaboration Council. She is also Chair of RMIT International University and RMIT Vietnam Holdings, and a number of the Boards of RMIT International and RMIT Training.
Professor Gardner has also written and co-authored several books including ‘Employment Relations: Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management in Australia’ (2nd Edition), and ‘Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations in the Public Sector’, as well as a wide range of journal articles, conference papers and government reports.
She was Chair of two major Queensland government taskforces, in 2002 authoring The Review of Pathways Articulation Through the Post-Compulsory Years of School to Further Education Training and Labour Market Participation, and in 1998 the Review on Queensland Industrial Relations Legislation.
