The family of Maria Jelinek (born Marie Jelínková in 1942) fled to Canada from Czechoslovakia in 1948 at the beginning of the Cold War. She and her brother, Otto, became figure skaters and achieved prominence in 1962 when they won the gold medal at the World Figure Skating Championships that was held that year in their birthplace of Prague. The pair had been warned not to return, but did so anyway. They were the first to perform lifts with several rotations, and also performed side-by-side double jumps.
