King started his career at Dulwich Hamlet, then Barnet before joining Gillingham in 2000. Although the club intended him to be a back-up to established striker Carl Asaba, injuries to key players saw them thrust into the starting line-up, where he quickly established himself as the club's main striker. His career was nearly derailed in 2002 when he was sent to prison after being caught by police in a stolen BMW, but the Gills stuck by him, and he was back in the team within two days of his release.
He left Priestfield to join Nottingham Forest in 2003. King spent most of 2005 on loan, first to Leeds United and then Watford.
After impressing on loan at Watford, King was signed full time, and he finished top scorer in the Football League Championship in the 2005-06 season, his 21 goals helping Watford gain promotion to the Premiership via the play-offs, beating former colleagues Leeds United 3-0 in the final.
He scored his debut Premier League goal against West Ham United in the second game of the new season. His second Premiership goal, the first in 3-3 draw with Fulham on 2 October marked his 100th goal in domestic competition. In the following game, against Arsenal he sustained a knee injury which kept him out the Hornets' draws with Charlton Athletic and Tottenham Hotspur and their League Cup victory against Hull City. During his return to fitness he suffered a relapse, and in an exploratory operation it was discovered that some bone had flaked away from his femur. The injury will keep him out of all the 2006-07 season.[1]
In 2002 King served five months of a two-year prison sentence for handling a stolen car before being released on appeal.
On 10 January 2007 The Daily Mail reported that King had been arrested after a brawl at a London nightclub. [2]
King played for Jamaica in the friendly against Ghana on May 29 which they lost 4-1. He would also have been in the squad to face England in a friendly on Saturday 3 June, but was sent home for an alleged breach of discipline. Jamaica lost the match 6-0. [3] As a result of the incident, the Jamaican Football Federation banned King from international football until May 2008.[4] King later criticised the general organisation of the Jamaican set-up.
