Martha Clarke

Martha Clarke (born June 3, 1944) is one of the most important modern choreographers in America.
Born into an intensely musical family in suburban Baltimore, she studied at the dance program of the Juilliard School. She then spent three years performing with the modern dance choreographer Anna Sokolow and the Dance Theatre Workshop. She later became a member of Pilobolus Dance Theatre before going on to a highly original career as a choreographer.
Her most famous work is "The Garden of Earthly Delights" (1984), an exploration in dance of the famous painting by Hieronymus Bosch. In 1990 she received a MacArthur Foundation grant, popularly known as the "genius grant".
