From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mascara (originally Mu`askar, for military camp, in the Arabic language) is a city in the north west of Algeria. It serves as the capital of the 29th province, also named Mascara. The city proper has a population over 110,000 people, not including the surrounding areas of Ksibia and El Mamounia, which together add a further 70,000 people. Mascara was the capital city of Emir Abd al-Qadir, the Algerian resistance leader against early French colonial rule, who was a native of the area. Mascara played an important role in the history of what is today the modern republic of Algeria since the Roman era. Today, it is a leading city in Algeria in agriculture and industry. The city is also home of Lakhdar Belloumi, the former Algerian football (soccer) star.
On August 18, 1994, an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale shook the city, killing 171 persons.
