Mass gap

A quantum field theory model is said to have a mass gap if the energy spectrum not including zero has a positive greatest lower bound. In Yang-Mills theory, which is a quantum field theory, it is assumed to have a mass gap, however nobody managed to prove it mathematically. This problems is called the Yang–Mills existence and mass gap problem and is one of the Millenium problems of mathematics announced by the Clay Institute.
The mass spectrum for a particle is isolated if there is an open interval for the mass such that only states with a center-of-mass energy of m exist if the COM energy lies within the open interval. The property of being isolated is stronger than having a mass gap.
