Matthew "Matt" Murray (born May 2, 1981 in Solihull) is an English footballer who plays as a goalkeeper.
Murray first came into the Wolves team in August 2002 against Crystal Palace, deputising for the injured Michael Oakes, and kept his place right through that season, including a man-of-the-match performance in the Play-off final in May 2003. In this game, he produced a number of vital saves, the pick being a second-half penalty save from Michael Brown.
He followed this up by debuting for England Under 21s, before injury hampered his second season at the club. In the three years that followed the 2002–03 season, he only played seven games for Wolves.
On March 21, 2006 he went on loan to Tranmere Rovers, but on April 28, was called back to Wolves because of possible injuries to other goalkeepers Stefan Postma and Michael Oakes. He started his first game for Wolves in almost sixteen months on the final day of the season at Norwich City, and managed to retain his place at the beginning of the 2006–2007 season, where he was largely acredited with Wolves' impressive start to the season, due to a catalogue of good performances allowing for five of Wolves first seven games to end 1–0.
Due to Murray's excellent form during the season he was rewarded with a new three-and-a-half year contract on 8 December 2006, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2009–10 season. He received the PFA Championship Player of the Month award for December 2006. Murray was named in the Championship Team of the Year at the 2006–07 PFA Awards dinner and also voted the PFA Fans' Player of the Year for the division. He was also voted Wolves Player of the Season.
However, the 2006–07 season ended on a sour note as he broke his shoulder on the eve of his club's vital playoff game. After spending the summer recouperating from this injury, he suffered another setback when he damaged his knee in pre-season training. He will undergo surgery for this injury, which is expected to rule him out of action until February 2008.[1]
It is well documented that Matt Murray is under heavy observation from the England goalkeeping coaches for the full international team. He has already represented England five times at under 21 level. Murray may also be eligible to play for Nigeria, through his biological father [1]. However, this has not been confirmed by the footballing authorities, and the Nigerian boss Berti Vogts has recently called up several EU based players with varying Nigerian connections [2].
