Matteson is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,928 at the 2000 census.

Matteson (Matt-e-son) is located at 41°30′35″N, 87°44′21″W (41.509832, -87.739267)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 7.2 square miles (18.7 km²), of which, 7.1 square miles (18.5 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.97%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 12,928 people, 4,561 households, and 3,553 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,811.2 people per square mile (699.1/km²). There were 4,712 housing units at an average density of 660.2/sq mi (254.8/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 32.72% White, 62.64% African American, 0.12% Native American, 1.55% Asian, 1.11% from other races, and 1.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.37% of the population.

There were 4,561 households out of which 37.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% were married couples living together, 18.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.1% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.21.

In the village, the population was spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 86.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $59,583, and the median income for a family was $65,666. Males had a median income of $46,075 versus $33,339 for females. The per capita income for the village was $25,024. About 2.7% of families and 4.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.0% of those under age 18 and 7.4% of those age 65 or over.

Matteson is in Illinois' 2nd congressional district.
