Crumm was born in Arizona on October 8, 1985. He grew up in Phoenix, graduating from Desert Vista High School in 2003. He moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting, and attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Hollywood. While seeking jobs as an actor, he worked as a gym receptionist.

In 2006, he auditioned to be a contestant on the Grease competition. Criticized for his "slacker" attitude and bad haircut, he barely made it onto the show, being literally the last person chosen. However, he won over the judges with very entertaining performances where he displayed a keen sense of humor. Crumm proceeded to the finals of the show, where on March 18 it was learned that he had a 1% difference in voter preference between him and his finalist competitor Austin Miller. On March 25, Crumm was declared the winner. He will play the role of Danny on Broadway starting July 24, 2007, playing alongside the female winner Laura Osnes as Sandy and Jenny Powers (2000 Miss Illinois) as Rizzo.
