The Mayor of Taipei City, in Taiwan, was an appointed position from Taipei's conversion to a centrally-administered municipality in 1967, until the first public election was held in 1994. The position is of a four-year term. The first democratically elected mayor was Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) of the Democratic Progressive Party (民主進步黨; DPP), who is currently the President of the Republic of China. Kuomintang's Ma Ying-jeou defeated Chen for the mayoralty in 1998 and was reelected in 2002. In 2006, Kuomintang's Hau Lung-pin was elected mayor.
