Medical fetishism is a neologism used to describe the context in which medical environments, practices and objects are eroticized.[citation needed]
Typical scenarios of interest include intimate examinations such as rectal examination, gynecological examination, rectal temperature taking, catheterization, enemas, injections, the insertion of suppositories, menstrual cups and prostatic massage.[citation needed] Dentistry and teeth are also subject to fetishes while a person is sexually aroused or stimulated by the sight, brushing, or feel of dental braces, retainers and headgear). Other medical devices are also fetishized, such as orthopedic casts and orthopedic braces in abasiophilia.
Another form of medical fetishism is surgical fetishism, which eroticises the idea of either performing surgery or (more commonly) having surgery performed on one's self. Even more specific is anesthesia fetishism which involves the procedures and devices used to administer general anesthesia, especially the mask used to administer gaseous anesthesia to a patient. These can be related to hypnofetishism or balloon fetishism (the latter likely because of the balloon-like 'rebreathing bag' often used when administering gaseous anesthesia).
