The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal and Trial by Combat in Medieval France

Tells the story of the December 29th, 1386 duel between Jean De Carroughes and Jaques Le Gris. De Carroughes accused Le Gris of raping his wife the previous January, and King Charles IV agreed to trial by combat to settle the matter, the last officially recognized duel in French history. On the day of the duel, De Carroughes successfully killed Le Gris.

Filmmaker Martin Scorsese recently optioned this story as a film he will definately produce and possibly direct. Rumors concerning casting state that Matt Damon is being considerded for the role of Jean De Carroughes, while Leonardo DiCaprio is being considerded to act against type in playing the role of the suspected rapist, Jaques Le Gris. If these rumors prove true, it will be the second time Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio will be in a movie by Martin Scorsese, the first being the recently named Best Picture winner The Departed.
